Game Development with Roblox
Ready to turn your gaming passion into game creation? Join our Game Development with Roblox camp to learn how to design, code, and build your very own interactive Roblox games! Using Roblox Studio, a free game design engine, students will dive into the fundamentals of game development and coding in a fun, hands-on environment.
When?
Monday March 10 - Friday March 14, 2025; 1:00-4:00pm.
Who?
This camp is for students in grades 6-9.
Where?
The Vancouver Independent School for Science and Technology (VISST) - 1490 West Broadway,Vancouver, BC.
What Will You Learn
Welcome to Roblox Studio!: Students will get an inside look on how some of their favourite games are formed in the Roblox Universe and began to create their own environments.
Custom 3D Designs: Using Roblox’s modeling tools, students will create their own game pieces to interact and build with.
Hello World!: Scripting with Luau, an extension of the Lua coding language, students will learn how to program their own game commands to design a beginner friendly project - a platformer.
Design Theory: There is more to designing a game than just making it look good. Students will be led through thought-provoking discussions about several game design concepts and theories such as line of sight, player predictability, linear vs divergent pathing, and how challenging is too challenging?
Communication Skills: Exchange of feedback will be facilitated once projects are underway to develop tactful and constructive feedback - how to effectively give as well as receive.
Audio and Ambience: projects will be wrapped up by adding audio to help elevate the player’s experience.
Play with Friends: Students will be able share/post their own games to play with not only their classmates, but also family and friends.
Program Requirements
Students should bring their own LAPTOP with ROBLOX STUDIO installed and running to make sure it working on their computers (iPads and tablets as well as some Chromebooks do not work).
A mouse strongly recommended as it is difficult to design using a trackpad.
If you want to borrow a laptop from us, we have a VERY limited number available. Please email us to request one.
