3D Modeling and Animation
If you love watching 3D animated movies, this is the camp for you! Discover how to create your own 3D animations just like they do in the movies. Using Blender, an open-source 3D modeling program, students, in collaboration with their peers, will learn the basics of 3D modeling and animation to produce their own short movie.
When?
Monday March 17 - Friday March 21, 2025
9:00am - 12:00noon.
Who?
This camp is for students in grades 5-9.
Cost
The camp fee is $295 (including tax).
If the fee is a barrier to your participation, a limited number of bursaries are available for eligible families - please email camps@visst.ca to inquire.

Why should you attend?
Make a 2D sketch come to life by turning into a 3D movie.
Learn an open-source modeling and animation program so you can upload your movies to Youtube and share them with your friends and family.
Try something you won’t find in school that combines 3D modeling and animation.
Earn a certificate of completion from the Vancouver Independent School for Science and Technology.
What will you learn?
Design a 3D Dinosaur: Students will kick off the camp by modeling actual simple characters iusing a wide range of techniques and tools. A great introduction to Blender, the open-source program we will be using throughout the week.
From Cubes to Characters: With a few modeling techniques in their back pockets, students will now be able sketch out their own characters and create 3D model in order to to prepare them for action.
Move it Along: 3D models aren’t just for statues - you can make them move as well! Using the power of keyframe animations, students will put their characters into motion on screen.
Animate, Animate, Animate! Students will work together on an animated short movie and work on bringing their storyline to life on screen.
Compilation and Movie Premier: Stitching together everyone’s scenes into a cinematic masterpiece, students will be able showcase their final movie to their family and friends.
Program Requirements
Students should bring their own laptops AND mice (trackpads do not work very well for 3D modeling).
Students should try to install and run Blender on their computers prior to camp.
If you want to borrow a laptop and mouse from us, we have a limited number available. Please email us to request one.
Camp Instructor
Thanh Nguyen
Thanh is a multimedia artist with over a decade of experience in teaching creative technology and digital fabrication in the Metro Vancouver region.
Since graduating from the Art Institute of Vancouver with a degree in Game Art and Design, she has been teaching game design and programming, 3D modeling and animation. She has been developing specialized curriculums and teaching creative technology courses, workshops and camps with Byte Camp and MakerLabs, and is currently the Design and Technology Specialist with VISST.
Thanh is always looking for ways to provide accessible avenues of learning to students keen on learning about the digital arts.

Make it a Full-Day camp
If you want to make this a full day camp experience, you can register for this camp AND our 3D Game Development with Roblox camp from 1:00-4:00pm (March 10-14) concurrently and save $40. Students who take both camps can stay at VISST from 12:00-1:00pm for a supervised lunch. Please bring your own lunch (no nuts or seafood).
Fees and Registration
Refund policy: Email us at least 1 week (7 days) prior to the start of the camp for a full refund.
Cancellation policy: VISST reserves the right to cancel camps and refund camp fees due to low enrolment. In this event, we will provide as much advance notice as possible.
