Where?

The Vancouver School for Science and Technology (VISST): 1490 West Broadway, Vancouver.

Why should you attend?

  • Observe the world around you and discover how we can create a more sustainable society that positively impacts our health, wealth and happiness.

  • Learn from an experienced educator with a PhD from the University of Queenland who is passionate about nature, science and STEM education.

  • Try something you won’t find in school: Perform experiments and play games while you learn about making this world a better place.

  • Earn a certificate of completion from the Vancouver Independent School for Science and Technology.

What will you learn?

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Countries around the world are actively working to reach the SDGs, but what are these and how are they helpful? Reflect on the interrelationships between biodiversity, poverty, equity, and health.

How do we get clean water? Learn about the water cycle, the impact of pollutants, and how we can clean contaminated waterways.

Mysteries of the big and tiny organisms in our lives: There is rich biodiversity that we can observe from different scales - from large animals to tiny bacteria. Observe organisms, learn about food webs and the interactions between animals. We will dive into cells, understanding that bacteria are not always ‘bad’.

How can we use energy efficiently? Learn about the different forms of energy and reflect on sources of energy around the world. In hands-on activities, we will explore how electricity works.

Health promotion: What does it mean to be ‘healthy’? How can we untangle different health messages from different sources? Explore the facets of health, including physical and mental health, and learn to identify health misinformation online. We will explore nutrition in terms of our personal health, and also from a global perspective.
