What will you learn?
Math and Magic, what do these two topics have in common? Math can be magical and magic can be mathematical - combine the two and you’ll get double the fun.
In this camp, students will learn techniques for improving their mental math skills and performing impressive calculations quickly. For example, students will discover how to instantly determine the day of the week given any date from the last 250 years or the next 200 years.
Students will also get a chance to practice various magic tricks (no sleight of hand required!), all of which have a mathematical basis. They will enhance their ability to concentrate and focus, and get an insight into the design of algorithms.

Location: The Vancouver Independent School for Science and Technology (VISST): 1490 West Broadway, Vancouver.
Who?
This camp is for students going into grades 5-8.
Program Requirements
None, except a desire to learn and practice with peers.
Camp Instructor
Brian Taylor
VISST TEACHER
Brian Taylor has had 20 years of experience teaching mathematics and computer science. Brian graduated with a BA in Mathematics from UBC and an MBA in Finance from the University of Illinois. He worked in a bank in Chicago and a software firm in New York before returning to Vancouver and eventually switching careers. He earned his BEd from UBC and has worked in both private and public schools in Vancouver. Brian enjoys hiking with his dogs, cross country skiing, playing squash and ocean swimming. Make it a Full-Day camp
If you want to make this a full day camp experience, you can register for this camp AND our Adventures in Writing with AI camp from 9:00am-12:00pm (July 7-11) concurrently and save $40. Students who take both camps can stay at VISST from 12:00-1:00pm for a supervised lunch. Please bring your own lunch (no nuts or seafood).

If the fee is a barrier to your participation, a limited number of bursaries are available for eligible families - please email camps@visst.ca to inquire.
Refund policy: Email us at least 1 weeks (7 days) prior to the start of the camp for a full refund.
Cancellation policy: VISST reserves the right to cancel camps and refund camp fees due to low enrolment. In this event, we will provide as much advance notice as possible.
